Stress

Stress is caused by any situation where we feel anxious, frustrated or angry. We all suffer from different levels of stress in our lives and whilst we have a naturally evolved process for coping with high levels of stress for short periods of time, unresolved stress that builds up over long periods can lead to chronic stress that can have an adverse affect on our immune system, health and overall sense of well-being.

Stress and the 'Fight or Flight' Response

Our naturally evolved process for coping with stress is referred to as as our 'fight or flight' response. This response is triggered in any situation where there is a real or perceived threat or danger and as a result of the 'fight or flight' mechanism we produce the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline, increasing our energy and strength to respond in the appropriate way.

Stress can be Caused by Different Factors

However we often find ourselves in situations in our everyday lives where there is no release for the stress response. As a result the accumulation of stress causes negative feelings and emotions increasing our overall level of anxiety. Stress can be caused by a number of different factors such as:

  • Bereavement, grief and loss
  • Separation or divorce
  • Getting married
  • Birth of a child
  • Moving home
  • Loss of a job or income
  • Starting a new job
  • Children leaving home
  • Relationship difficulties

Counselling can Help with Stress

Stress counselling can help you to understand the 'fight or flight' mechanism and this is the first step in coping with stress together with understanding the importance of restful sleep and our naturally evolved mechanisms for releasing an accumulation of stress. Stress counselling can also help you to learn how to reverse the automatic stress response with breathing techniques and relaxation. Learning these coping techniques can help you to evaluate your situation and to start to plan a positive course of action to overcome stress.

As a Counsellor I am committed to helping you find your own inner resources and strengths to work through difficulties to live a happy and fulfilling life.
